Your Eye Care Muse
A 1983 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. In 1988 opened Total Eyecare, a private practice in the mountain and lake region of Northwestern New Jersey. The office has grown to 2 offices 3 doctors and 18 staff. The practice employs state-of-the-art equipment, including wide field retinal imaging, optical cohesive tomography, corneal topography and specular microscopy, for every routine eye exam.
A big believer in technology, Dr. Ripps has also lectured on office computerization and has used an EMR system for more than 15 years. But technology can only take you so far, he says. “Staying connected to patients via the Web or social media makes it easy for them to do business with you. But if you want people to truly rave about your practice, the most powerful tool is your ears.”
Patients want to be heard, more than anything, he says. In a recent evaluation, 98% of respondents said Dr. Ripps solved their problem. He’s proud to be a problem solver—but even happier about prescribing contact lenses that prevent problems in the first place.
He specializes in all types of contact lenses, including specialty and hybrid lenses, corneal reshaping, and his favorite, 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Brand Contact Lenses. Daily disposable contact lenses now constitute more than 70% of his contact lens practice, which makes for happy patients and a steady stream of referrals.
“Patients see value in their success and comfort. When you prescribe for success, it enhances patients’ experience."
Dr. Ripps is an avid skier, cyclist, and tennis player. One of his most memorable achievements was riding 7 days of the Tour de France through the Pyrenees mountain stages of the race in 2006. He also loves photography and cruise travel with his family. He and his wife, Debbie (who also serves as the CFO of Total Eyecare) have three children, Jeff (31), Zach (25), and Molly (17).
